报告内容摘要

This paper studies the impacts of globalization - measured in terms of FDI presence and export - on the skilled-unskilled wage gap in China’s 10 manufacturing industries. We develop a theoretical model in which FDI and export affect the equilibrium skilled-unskilled wage gap; the model also generates a set of moment conditions that allow us to identify the parameters of interest. GMM estimates show that FDI presence and exports have a significant effect on the wage gap, although the average impact masks considerable heterogeneity across industries. A rising political concern in China is increasing wage inequality. Our findings suggest that policies that promote skill-augmented productivity growth in industries with low substitutability between skilled and unskilled workers may have a long-term effect on wage inequality, as long as industry heterogeneity is taken into account.
