In the spirit of helping bridge the finance gap for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), the existent Supply Chain Finance (SCF) studies focus on innovations in SCF solutions and the financing channels. However, few studies pay attention to the actual flow of capital within the supply chain after the credit is injected from various SCF solutions. Due to the power disparity, the capital that small firms obtain through SCF solutions may eventually flow back to large firms and leave small firms still short of liquidity. This study suggests a Balanced Working Capital Distribution (BWCD) strategy among supply chain firms to coordinate the financial flows. Empirical tests investigating its effectiveness in improving the performance at both supply chain and individual firm level were conducted ex-post. The results show that the BWCD strategy does have a positive impact on the performance of the overall supply chain historically and the main driving force of the overall profitability improvement is the higher margin from sales. We also found evidence that BWCD strategy improves the performance of firms regardless their position at a supply chain and financial condition. The benefit of the BWCD strategy is more significant for upstream firms and financially constrained firms.
