SMEs have always found it difficult to access bank credit. Part of the problem is the issue of asymmetric information that makes SME lending a risky prospect for banks. The role of Relationship Managers is to screen SMEs borrowers by translating soft information and transmitting this information to Lending Managers in the bank organisation. This seminar reports on two projects relating to SME lending in the UK. The first project focuses on the value of relationship banking to SMEs in Wales in the period following the global banking crisis. The results show that SMEs that had developed a customer-loan relationship with their banks had a lower probability of experiencing a worsened credit outcome than those that did not. The second project tests the argument that large institutions with complex organisational structures are better able to filter ‘hard’ information than ‘soft’ information. It explores the spatial dispersion of SME lending in the UK in terms of geographical distance by examining bank lending to SMEs by postcode district in the UK. | |||
