报告内容简介: Opening-up not only promotes China's economic growth, but also has an impact on the domestic environment. This paper analyzes the impact of the liberalization of intermediate imports on the intensity of pollution emissions and its transmission mechanism. Empirical analysis based on micro level firm pollution data shows that, after controlling the self-selection effect and potential endogenous problems, the liberalization of intermediate imports significantly reduces the emission intensity of SO2 and chemical oxygen demand. And this effect has a certain degree of heterogeneity. Mechanism analysis shows that the trade in intermediate goods can affect the environmental performance of firms through the productivity effect brought by technology spillover and the cost saving effect brought by import competition. The extended analysis shows that the decrease in the pollution emission intensity within the firm is the main reason for the decrease in the aggregated pollution intensity of the manufacturing industry. This paper provides a useful reference for how to promote the sound development of the domestic social economy through opening-up, especially importing in the system of labor division under the global value chain. 报告人简介: Wang Xiaosong, (1983-), male, professor, School of Economics, Renmin University of China.
