报告内容摘要 | In this study, we use a configurational approach to study enablers for high-performance outsourcing projects. We integrate three dominant theories in outsourcing research, i.e., transaction cost economics, agency theory, and resource dependency theory, along with literature in IT outsourcing (ITO) and business process outsourcing (BPO) to identify key enablers of high-performance outsourcing projects. Five enablers are identified: client’s governance capabilities, supplier’s capabilities, risk management and compliance capabilities, contract specificity, and environmental factors. We argue that high-performance outsourcing projects can be delivered by combinations of these five enablers. To realize this theoretical objective, we use fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, a set-theoretic method, to analyze survey data collected from 24 contracts, which involve 293 individual respondents from both client’s and supplier’s firms. The results reveal two sets of configurations for high business value and high service quality respectively at the contract level. Next, we analyze interview data from these 24 contracts to further understand the causes of high-performance projects and develop propositions. Implications of our findings for theory, practitioners, and the analysis of contract-level behavior are developed. | |
