报告内容摘要

We study discrimination based on the hukou system that segregates citizens in groups of migrants and locals in urban China. We use an economic experiment with a labor market framing and workers recruited on their real labor market as experimental participants. Our experimental results show that discrimination on this characteristic, which is exogenous for our participants, is observable. Furthermore, it increases when introducing more insecure labor market conditions
as often faced by migrant workers in large cities. Statistical discrimination is not the source of this, as migrants and locals do not behave differently in a framework that eliminates ambiguity about work quality in experimental choices.
