报告内容摘要：We estimate the impact of the renminbi appreciation during 2005-2007 on the innovation behavior of Chinese manufacturing firms. The appreciation creates larger competitive pressure on firms with higher export intensity, inducing them to invest more in innovation. We find that (1) the appreciation induced exporters to increase R&D investment 11% more than non-exporters. New product development by exporters also increased more than non-exporters during the appreciation period. (2) The impact is larger for exporters with higher export intensity. (3) Exporters with different productivity respond differently to the appreciation, productive exporters stay in the export market and increase innovation, while less productive exporters quit exporting and reduce innovation. These results couldn’t be explained by models linking exports and innovation only through changes in market access, and suggest the importance of competition in promoting firm innovation.
