| 报告内容摘要 | Open source software (OSS) development is a prominant example of open innovation paradigm. One of the benefits of OSS open innovation approach is bringing in external knowledge at low cost. However, not all OSS products are licensed under a restrictive GPL license, which requires OSS code contributors publicize their code and then enables the OSS originator to easily gain external knowledge. Indeed, some OSS products are licensed under a non-restrictive BSD license, which allows OSS contributors to keep their code private. To understand this real-world phenomenon, we develop a software competition model with three strategic players: a proprietary software provider, an OSS originator, and an OSS contributor. We show that the BSD license can be the best choice for the OSS originator under certain conditions. That is, it is not always the best interest for the OSS originator to force OSS contributors to pulicize their source code. The OSS originator may want to get other benefits of OSS open innovation approach (e.g. increasing user base, reducing marketing costs) rather than bring in external knowledge at low cost. We also show how the license choice of the OSS originator affects the other two players, the OSS contributor and the proprietary software provider. | ||
