报告简介：

U.S. banks perform better in corporate social responsibility (CSR) relative to nonbank firms prior to 2010. The trend reverses after 2010, primarily in the social rather than the environmental dimension. We conjecture that tightened regulations on the banking industry fromthe 2010 Dodd Frank Act lead to the reversal of CSR performance. We find supporting evidence.The reduction in CSR performance is more pronounced in banks facing greater regulatory pressure. However, it does not occur to shadow banks, which are less regulated. We also find that CSR performance reduces to a larger degree in banks with poorer operating performance or higher institutional investor ownership. Overall, our findings suggest that bank regulation, even unrelated to CSR, could have a negative externality on bank CSR.
