Abstract:

With the availability of data and the development of computer software and hardware, machine learning technology has been widely used in the field of social sciences and natural sciences. In the field of social sciences, the application of the technology, although starts later, has been developing rapidly. This lecture aims to systematically introduce the application of machine learning in social sciences. After a brief introduction of definitions, applications in social sciences and natural sciences, we will introduce the application of machine learning in social sciences in detail from three aspects: data generation, prediction, and causal identification. Limited by the maturity of social science causal identification methodology and the sample size, the speaker believes that although machine learning has expanded the boundaries of social science research, it will not subvert the existing research paradigm. Finally, the speaker will discuss the problems that this technology may bring in the application process in terms of academic inequality and reproducibility.
